Is there usually a pretty big lag time between TV pilots and TV shows?
Especially now that you can watch your favorite TV shows on DVD collections, I’ve noticed that I reckon that the pilot episodes must sometimes be filmed way before, like six or nine months before the rest of the series. Because on the early episodes, the actors have different haircuts, like all the sudden between episode five and six, it looks like somebody grew two inches of hair. Stuff like that. And sometimes there’s character with a large role in the first four or five episodes, who disappears or is replaced in the following episodes, but the characters never mention the character leaving, or act like they miss him when he’s gone.
Like for instance, I’ve been watching DVDs of “Freaks And Geeks” lately, and the Nick and Ken characters hair is significantly longer once the season gets going than it was in the early episodes.
Also judging by his appearance on the theme song film that shows with every episode, Nick was originally supposed to be one of the geeks maybe, and then they switched him to a freak for some reason?

at times. Glee had a lag time of about half a year and so did Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide. It all depends on the network and the newness of the show.
It really depends on the show.
Some shows just aren’t accepted straight away. Like the network executives aren’t ready to make a choice on whether or not they want to green-light the show for production, so they pretty much push it aside. It can be years before they choose to give it a season.
But also, you know, the pilot could’ve been made long before they even pitched the show.
The most common factor, though, is production time. Even if the show is picked up immediately, all the episodes need to be done before the season can air. If it’s a cartoon, the production time is probably around 9 months, give or take (unless it’s South Park, which is like a month). For a live-action show, I’d say maybe 4-6 months.
